The Meadowlark

The Meadowlark is the state bird of Kansas. This chunky brown bird often flushes from the brush showing white on each side of it's tail. It flies with rapid wingbeats alternating with short glides. It feeds on insects, seeds and waste grain.

The meadowlark's range is from southeast Canada to Cuba, to Brazil. It partially migrates during the winter. It lives in fields, meadows and prairies.

The meadowlark nest is of dried grasses placed in a depression under a clump of grass, usually with an arch over the nest. It lays 3 to 7 eggs which are white with fine brown and purple spots.
