The State Seal
"Ad Astra per Aspera" is latin for "To the stars through
difficulties." Man can reach his dreams in Kansas even though times
may be difficult.
The farmer plowing reminds us that early farmers had to plow up
the long prairie grass with a horse drawn plow in order to plant his
crops.
Thirty-four stars in a blue sky symbolize that Kansas is the 34th
state to join the United States of America.
Two indians driving buffalo away from the plains reminds us that
once great heards of buffalo roamed over Kansas. But they like the
indians were driven away until their numbers became very small.
The log cabin shows man's determination to live in this land.
Through hard work he made a home for himself.
The rising sun represents the East, from where most settlers
came.
The covered wagon reminds us that most settlers traveled to
Kansas in this manner.
The steamboat on the river provided transportation and brought
early settlers many supplies.
January 29, 1861, the day Kansas became a state.
