John Brown, famed abolitionist came to Kansas to fight for the anti-slavery cause. In his first year here, he led a band of Free-Staters that murdered five Proslaveryites.

George Washington Carver, was an unsuccessful Kansas farmer before he became a famous scientist/teacher.

William F. "Buffalo Bill" Cody was a buffalo hunter, wagon driver, Pony Express rider, detective and Indian scout in Kansas.

Charles Curtis was a congressman or senator for many years. He was the vice-president of the United States under Herbert Hoover. He was the first person of Indian ancestry to hold the job of vice-president.

Amelia Earhart Putnam was a native of Atchison Kansas. She was the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic ocean. In 1937 she attempted to fly around the world and was lost in the Pacific Ocean. The picture above shows her in a parade in Atchison in 1935.

Robert Merrel Gage, native Topekan, is a world renowned sculptor of Abraham Lincoln. He is seen here at work on his first Lincoln sculpture.

 

James Butler "Wild Bill" Hickok was marshal of Abilene during 1871, it's last and biggest year as a cowtown. He was still a young inexperienced Kansas settler when this picture was taken in 1858.

Alf Landon served two terms as governor beginning in 1932. In 1936 he was the Republican nominee for President.
