Brig.Gen. Henry Leavenworth. Ft. Leavenworth was founded in 1827. The oldest military post west of the Mississippi still in operation.

Frederic Remington at Peabody in 1883 was an unsuccessful sheep rancher. He won fame as a great painter and sculptor of Western scenes.

Mrs. Susanna Madora Salter was the first woman mayor of any city in the U.S. She was mayor of Argonia in 1887. She is shown here in her marriage photo with husband Lew.

Sven Birger Sandzen came to LIndsborg from Sweden in 1894 to teach at Bethany College. His bold paintings won him international acclaim.

 

Dr. James Naismith invented the game of basketball at the International YMCA Training School in Springfield Mass. In 1889 he began a long career as director of physical education and coach at the University of Kansas at Lawrence.

Dwight David Eisenhower grew up in Abilene. He served as President from 1953 to 1961.

Mrs. Flo Menninger, Husband Charles (second from right) and her sons Doctors William, Edwin and Karl. Charles and Karl founded the Menninger clinic which became the world famous Menninger Foundation.
